A trunk load of trouble

The circus has rolled into Trenton and the Humane Society of the United States is encouraging the public to avoid all circuses that use wild animals in their performances. Michael Markarian, executive VP for the HSUS, said "Wild animals in circuses are subjected to inhumane conditions as they travel from town to town in circuses and traveling shows." Many moons ago we school kids donated allowances to buy the Atlanta zoo an elephant. Thirty years later I returned to my hometown as a columnist and one of the first places I went was the zoo to see Penny, so named because that's what most of us donated. It was heart-breaking. Such a huge animal in such a small space. I started a drive to close the zoo and donate the animals to the big open safari parks. It wasn't closed. But the city sold it to a zoological society that redesigned it and today it gets a high rating. That experience turned me against circuses and old-fashioned zoos with small cages. To read about The Elephant Sanctuary, a wonderful organization that adopts elephants and lets them live out their lives in relative normalcy in Tennessee, click here.

Oh well. So much for Corzine taking his revised toll scheme (lipstick on a pig) on a roadshow come summer.

Michael Markarian, get a life! Chances are that no matter how "inhumane" the poor elephant's conditions were in the zoo, it led a much safer and healthier life then in the wild. what with vanishing food sources and territory not to mention ivory poachers.

There are more serious problems with humans throughout not only this country but the world. Why not channel your efforts where some real good might be done.

After all, their animals for God's sake!!!!

We should be worrying more about the clowns in Trenton than this nonsense.

I say let the wild animals from the circus roam Trenton. Then put all those from the gold dome in cages . It would solve a multitude of problems and each side would get what they deserve.

"The circus has rolled into Trenton "

I beg to differ - the circus has never left Trenton to begin with.

Once in a while a circus rolls into Jersey and, yes, we need to stop that cruelty.

Everyday viable children are aborted in the Garden State and we do it in the name of rights and choice. That's another cruelty that we should stop.

I love elephants too and I love babies also

I too believe in humane treatment of ALL animals .They are not put on earth for our entertainment ,but enjoyment ,which is a totally different picture .Remember they can only survive if humans let them ...which sometimes is sad ...Bob ho about donating the proceeds of your book (even for 1 day) to the SPCA ...

The SPCA, the Humane Society, the Wildlife Federation, the Elephant Sanctuary and the NJ-based Seeing Eye, which trains guide dogs for the vision impaired, among others, have been getting more than a day's proceeds from the book for several years and will continue to do so.
