Gas stations ripping off the public

Sen. Shirley Turner, D-Mercer, promoted a bill that would add fines to the existing ones for gas stations that don't post prices for credit and cash purchases. Eric DeGresero of the Fuel Merchants Association cried the poor gas pumpers would be hurt by the fines. Turns out it's a lot worse than negligence in signs. Unannounced inspections on more than 1,000 NJ stations in a three-day period found a third had pricing discrepancies, inaccurate octane ratings and equipment that was improperly calibrated. Said Attorney General Anne Milgram, "Consumers deserve to get what they pay for, especially when they are paying record-setting prices for gasoline." Milgram says she thinks most violations are intentional. Customers who suspect violations are asked immediately to call the state's weights and measures office at (732) 815-4840. Might be a good idea to exit the car to make sure they're going through the motions of giving you what you pay for. And to DeGresero, pimp for the pumpers: If the fines are so low your brigade can afford to rip off the public, the fines are too low. Your rip off stations should have to post a huge sign that says "We were caught cheating."

Hey Annie, how about the record setting prices we're paying for property taxes? I don't think I'm getting what I paid for. I don't think sending my tax money to be wasted by the Abbotts is money well spent. How about adding that to your list of "things to look into".

Another item to the list is Corzine wasting my tax dollars keep his emails private. If they were truly nothing to hide, they would have been released months ago. Why don't you look into that too on the grounds of taxpayers getting what we pay for.

Who cares! Any ripoff by the gas stations is insignificant to the gigantic ripoff we experience by living in this state every day. Isn't it convenient how Milgram picks on easy targets rather than going after the real money?

OK..Annies not my favorite person either but lets give her credit for some ..ANY accomplishment ,we know Corzine has kept her and staff busy fighting this e-mail problem of his so her time for us is limited .If we keep complaining she'll want a bigger staff just to go after the real crooks

Well here is a good thought to add, how many gas stations are in New Jersey? Next how many inpectors are there in weights and measures?

Now looking at both of the questions, do you thing the AG office will prosecute these gas station owners? Next will she do it on a per incident basis?

Given that this is a real gas/photo op reason, I can see the AG will pursue those stations as investigated by weights and measures. But will this be a problem since she has to protect the Korzine/Katz e-mails?

I just hope weights and measures has enough people to pursue this effort, or it could be a photo op window dressing to bypass multi-million dollar issues.

NJ had staff to look at 100 gas tations over a few days. Wha have they been doing the rest of the year?

I agree with others; a few bucks ripoff for gas is nothing compared to the raping I get from NJ.

How about Annie? Go after the big game!

Hear, hear 8:46, bravo. You have put the focus where it belongs. This is just another distraction. Gas stations could never steal as much money as Trenton. This lame brain no guts annie would have you believe the reason things are bad in NJ is because gas prices are high and you aren't getting your monies worth.

Forget the unaccounted for $8.6 BILLION that disappeared down abbott sewers, we'll get these gas stations. and these college websites and

Forget all these over-paid, do nothing, pension padders we'll get these college websites.

Forget Katz and Fox and transparency, we'll get these state workers who stole 4 gallons of gas.

The state should be protecting the consumer from fraud like this but it seems idiotic to make it a story when it is clear these fools in Trenton can't manage their own house. They ran like scared rabbits yesterday when the union showed up. This story is like sticking your finger in the dike while a tidal wave is washing over the top.

NOTHING!!! They probably forgot how to use their calibration/measurement equipment.

The AG should look into government waste next you say? Never! Doing so would be a violation of the #1 tenet for all government workers:

"Don't bite the hand that
feeds you!"

And, oh poor stations owners that would be hurt by the fines. Duh! Fine: A sum of money required to be paid as a penalty for an offense. Sounds to me like it SHOULD hurt!

Nothing will be done...some of the stations are probably owned by friends/family members in Trenton. This State can not even get a simple sign (s) errected at these stations without a payoff occurring.

I'm with the rest. Crooked gas stations should be fined and it a positive to catch and fix the problems.

At the same time, when one figures how much consumers (us) may have been ripped off over the course of a year by these stations, it probably isn't half of what the waste, corruption and mismanagement cost taxpayers (again us) EACH DAY!!!

Sort of like taking a pail of water out of the Mississippi thinking you're helping to ruduce the flooding.

Annie, it's something but you're still only catching bait. One day wake up, look in the mirror and decide to take the higher ethical road. It might lose you some powerful friends but in the long run it would bring more allies.
In general basic morality and high political office can't seem to go together.

Has anyone noticed that the $2.5 BILLION which was increased to $3.5BILLION is now $3.9 BILLION for school construction? The number continues to grow and the voters have no say because they know we won't approve it.

We have dumped money into these Abbott districts for over 10 years and there has been no academic improvement.

It's time to tell the supreme court to "POUND SAND"!!!

Well, I think it's nice that she's taking all of these baby steps toward doing some real prosecution.

It's like having an AG who still needs training wheels on her bicycle. Start with Juicy Campus, then maybe some gas thieves, then work your way up to gas stations...it's great.

Hey-everyone has a learning curve. She should be ready to work her way up to the SCC just as Corzine is ending his second term.

It's really nice to watch 'em grow up, isn't it?

I noticed too.

Being this is New Jersey,

I figure that the increase takes into account all the people that will be rehired that are being laid off in the new budget. With raises of course!

$3.5 3.9 what's $400 million among friends? SInce this is less than half the $8.6 BILLION they already made disappear this should be gone in no time.

What's $1.4 BILLION amongst friends?

Wall Street Bond Traders have to eat too.

When you have a bond trader for a governor you can see why the focus is mostly on bonding. Far from being a governor he is what he is, a bond trader, and bond traders trade bonds, period. (Ever notice the relationship between bond and BONDAGE?)

IF the fee for these bonds is 10%, $300 to $400 million or 1%, $30 to $40 million, WHAT EXACTLY DO bond traders DO THAT ENTITLES THEM TO THAT MUCH MONEY?

Now you see why bond traders trade bonds.

EVERYBODY ON THE BUS !!!!!!!!The New Jersey Education Association (NJEA) will conduct mass demonstrations on Friday at the offices of thirty State Senators to protest legislation they say targets teacher and school employee pensions. NJEA officials say that thousands of union members will participate.we will not tolerate – not now, not ever – any attempt to scapegoat teachers, bus drivers, cafeteria workers, crossing guards, and other school employees for sins they have never committed.
..Unions are sending a powerful message

We the taxpayer/voters of NJ need to start contacting Obama and McCain now and ask that when elected they select a US Attorney even more agressive than Christie to clean out the corruption in this state starting with the Governor on down. We need Obama to understand Corzine is a BIG if not the BIGGEST part of the problem but if he wants him he can have him.

We the taxpayers have reached the point where we have no choice left but to leave because of this corruption and then who will they tax???

Wow, the news here is that they actually inspected 1,000 stations in a 3 day period.

Imagine if they were doing their jobs all the time, they may not have over 30% of the gas stations ripping off the public.

The only reason they were doing it, is because they figured they wouldn't get caught. I'm glad the inspectors finally sprang into action. Keep it up...

Interesting how they did such a good job in just three days. I guess their budget should be increased.....or they could work this hard through the whole year and truly earn their pay.

If NJ's fuel tax is suppose to be much lower than our neighbors in Pa and De how come that before this recent surge in gas prices we were about 15 to 19 cents lower than them and now we are priced about the same as them?

I just returned from an overnight at Chincotegue Va and paid $3.96 a gallon at a Valero station in town. All the wau down and back I saw plenty of stations in Va, Md, and De that were priced at or below the prices we are seeing in NJ.

What happened to the break we use to recieve under the guise of significantly lower state fuel taxes?

Well, as I hear it, OR, rumour has it, that gal, godzieski(?), who got re-hired by Corzine for another no-show job, again, got burned at a station near Trenton and complained to Annie, who then threw her whole weight(yes, very light) into the fray of gas stations overcharging...of course, had it been a member of the public who complained, nothing would be done...

oh, and how come, we the public, can't get a list of the cheaters?
The AG is quick to give out a list of other criminals such as the perverts, why not the gas cheaters?
