They want 'Clean Elections' killed

Opponents of the state's Clean Elections program say the public campaign financing program is a failure and should be killed. They want the Legislature to concentrate on ending pay to play and legislative leadership accounts. The latter allows leadership to control a majority of campaign money with looser rules. Assemblywoman Alison Littell McHose, R-Sussex, questioned why Assembly Speaker Joseph J. Roberts Jr., D-Camden, was pursuing the "Clean Elections" program that costs taxpayer dollars while the other measures have a stronger link to curbing corruption. McHose said, "I'm saying he's a hypocrite because he's not looking to police himself, but yet he wants to police the rest of us." That brought this response from Roberts spokesman Derek Roseman: "Alison is a right-wing special interest puppet who is not terribly bright and doesn't stand for anything, so of course she's against cleaning up elections in New Jersey." So far the program didn't apply to primaries where the real fights are, if there is a challenge at all. And public financing hasn't changed the image of the New Jersey Legislature or the people elected to it.

Speaking of corruption, did you see the APP report?

" New Jersey taxpayers bear the heaviest state and local tax burden in the country for the third year in a row, according to a report released Wednesday by a fiscal policy organization in Washington, D.C.

The Tax Foundation found the state's residents paid 11.8 percent of their income in state and local taxes. The national average is 9.7 percent."

Hey......give Roberts a break, will ya.

We peons are lucky this "open-minded" elected representative of the people took time from wire-transferring government graft to his offshore accounts to favor us with a helpful message.

The poor, poor man.

Why Roberts could have gotten confused being forced to address "the people."

Heaven's----the guy might have gotten so confused, he could have accidentally wire-transferred several hundred million INTO the Jersey Treasury rather than OUT of it.

Not to mention how agitated Corzine would be, finding an extra hundred million in the Treasury.

Wow, that was real mature on Roberts part. He forgot to throw in that she's also a poopy-head.

A little word play.

"Roberts is a left-wing special interest puppet (Norcross) who is not terribly bright and doesn't stand for anything, so of course he's against cleaning up elections in New Jersey."

Alison McHose "not terribly bright"??? Her representation reflects "the people" more than Roberts. So I guess Roberts is saying we're all "not terribly bright"?

Roberts needs to go!

If your ideals are contrary to this, as Joe Roberts' are does this mean that Joe has no desire to clean up elections?

Reading between the lines it seems that Roberts has a very low opinion of Alison. I can't help but wonder if he feels the same way about the thousands of others who don't necessarily toe his line.

Wonder if this is the prevelent attitude in Trenton? Some how I seem to think so. Time for a good old fashion housecleaning!

VOTE THEM ALL OUT IN NOVEMBER, Then demand term limits and initiative and referendum!

There are too many officials in Trenton that have been there way too long.

We have allowed a large group of self serving, self righteous, egotistical, power crazed people to take control of OUR government.

Roberts, Codey, and the like are running their own empires and something as trivial as "people" won't get in their way.

We had better get out heads out of our collective butts and "un-elect" these slobs. We are approaching the point where elections really won't be necessary.

As those of us working/taxpaying citizens continue to leave what do you think this state will be like with what's left? Socialist thieves and the recipients of those social programs. Who are they going to tax when business and the working people are all gone?

Does N.J. Clean Elections need to be tweaked? Sure, it does; after all, we've only had it for 2 election cycles, some candidates didn't raise enough matching funds on their own, and other problems have come up.

But this program is something that we should be proud of -- it has been lauded by nearly every clean elections non-partisan group in the country, including the Public Action Campaign -- and needs to move forward. By providing public funding, not special interest funding, of elections, we eliminate one of the key areas that are marked as contributing to corruption; legislators can spend more time talking with constituents and getting small donations ($10 limit) rather than sucking up to special interest groups and getting PACS; district candidates in heavily D or R districts get an even playing field with their opponent; and election funding finally becomes transparent and open.

The issue in N.J., as with all of our good ideas, is the funding mechanism. But for something this important, I say move forward with more pilot programs for clean elections for the legislature; we must find the money to support this important clean elections work.

They ought to end the program. It's a waste of money, and a diversion.

Whatever schemes they dream up will fail.

The only way to truly have "clean elections" is to have intelligent, informed voters who are watchful and vote in the public interest.

We won't see that here.

It's a win for Roberts. He can say he's fighting for "clean elections".

The PIG!

Clean elections are very easy. All that needs to be required is COMPLETE and IMMEDIATE DISCLOSURE of all CONTRIBUTIONS (any, and I mean ANY, type of misrepresentation results in the race going to the opponent).

The contributions can be ANY SIZE. There should be NO RESTRICTIONS or REGULATIONS on contributions at all. This way, the electorate could know who bought and paid for each candidate and if the people then want to elect that person and if that candidates opponent can't make an issue of the contributions, SO BE IT.

Regulations lead to loop holes and lawsuits. Complete disclosure leads to honest elections.

"It was later revealed the university signed an exclusive marketing deal with a company that hired the son of Rutgers athletic director Robert E. Mulcahy. He has denied any wrongdoing, and said attorneys for the university found no conflict. In a written charge to the committee, McCormick acknowledged the recent reports have raised questions about the athletics department. "In the spirit of transparency and to ensure our adherence to sound business practices, I am asking you to undertake a review of, and to probe deeply, all the issues that arise in the course of this examination," he said in the charge.

I LOVE HOW THEY CALL FOR AN INVESTIGATION "IN THE SPIRIT OF TRANSPARENCY" AFTER THEY have already TRIED TO HIDE IT, GOT CAUGHT, AND IT HAS BEEN BLASTED ALL OVER THE MEDIA FOR THE LAST FEW WEEKS.

No, Derek, she is against a sham program that doesn't work, and wastes money.

If YOU are at all bright, then you understand that the program is a sham. You support it because you are a cynical "player" who is only interested in phony, feel-good, election-talking-point reform.

People like you and your boss are stealing from honest, hard-working families, and you have no decency.

why bother with clean elections? a large portion of the NJ electorate can best be described as brain dead. how else would you explain the fact that 39% of them think that corslime is doing a good job? this loser is in so far over his head i'm afraid of how much more damage he will do before he's gone. i think NJ is doomed.

I agree with 10:57. NJ is doomed. But, then so is the country.

Look at these two clowns we have running for President. If this is the best this country has to offer the end is not far off.

Look at these clowns pelosi and reid. This country has a very serious national security problem as relates to our dependence on foreign oil and these two pigs go on a 5 week vacation.

Children governing children. Doom is inevitable.
